DBKL shuts down 11 foreigner-run shops

KUALA LUMPUR: Eleven business premises ran by foreign nationals in Sungei Wang Plaza have been ordered to close by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).

The order was issued during a special operation by DBKL's enforcement division yesterday evening (Jan 23) after prior observations and surveillance were carried out for a week.

DBKL informed that spot checks carried out on the business premises at the popular shopping mall found that the businesses were operated by foreigners, namely Bangladesh, Pakistan and Myanmar nationals.

"Based on observations and intelligence gathering by the DBKL enforcement team since last week, a raid was carried out on 14 business premises run by foreign nationals from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Myanmar, that sold general items like clothes, shoes, bags, phones and computer accessories.

"Those premises also offered other services such as repairing electronic equipment and nail salon. The operation ended at around 9pm," read the statement.

According to DBKL, further checks were carried out on 27 sales assistants and premise operators made up of foreign nationals before the immediate closure order was made under Section 101(1)(v) of the Local Government Act of 1976.

"DBKL also issued 14 compound notices towards all the premises under the 2016 Business and Industrial Trade Bylaws; four were for not having a valid business license and 10 for engaging and appointing sales assistants without permission or relevant notification.

"Show cause letters will be issued to the owners of the business premises before further action is taken, such as permanent closure or cancellation of business license for allowing foreign nationals to run and operate business activities and premises without necessary licensing and approval," said a DBKL spokesperson.

DBKL also informed that they will continue checks and observations especially at all business locations that are run and operated by foreign nationals with the assistance from other relevant government agencies such as the Immigration Department and the National Registration Department (NRD).

In another enforcement operation carried out on Saturday (Jan 21), 14 business premises in the Kenanga Wholesale City, Jalan Kenanga off Jalan Gelugor were ordered to close immediately by DBKL after being identified as being run and operated by foreign nationals.

Just a day before that (Jan 20), a similar action was taken against nine business premises run and operated by foreign nationals in and around Berjaya Times Square and Jalan Imbi, Bukit Bintang.
