#HEALTH: Holistic approach to a healthy lifestyle

WITH public health issues ranging from non-communicable diseases (NCDs) to communicable diseases such as Covid-19 and environmental pollution becoming even more alarming, it is more crucial than ever for Malaysians to recognise that a healthy lifestyle involves a holistic approach and encompasses various aspects of self-care.

When talking about leading a healthy lifestyle, more often than not, people tend to associate this with having an exercise routine or fitness programme. The common understanding is that regular exercise is an important component of living healthy as it helps to maintain physical fitness and improve cardiovascular health. While this is most definitely true, it is not

the only factor that contributes to overall health and well-being.

In line with this, here are some steps that Malaysians can take toward leading a healthier lifestyle.

EAT RIGHT

A balanced diet is essential for good health. Malaysians should aim to consume a variety of foods from each food group, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins and healthy fats. It is also important to limit the intake of processed and sugary foods, which have become a ubiquitous feature of the modern food landscape in Malaysia.

With busy schedules and the convenience of fast-food options, many people, particularly working adults and students, tend to rely on this for quick and easy meals. However, the accessibility of processed and fast food comes at a cost, as over-consumption can take a toll on one's health due to high calories, sodium and unhealthy fats, amongst other factors.

These contribute to a range of health problems, including obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

MANAGE STRESS AND SLEEP WELL

Aside from consumption habits, as a hard-working nation, many Malaysians work long hours, and this can lead to work-related stress and burnout, impacting both physical and mental health. Due to this, people are also not getting enough sleep which can increase the risk of chronic diseases.

By getting eight hours of sleep each night and practicing relaxation techniques such as meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises, this can help to improve cardiovascular health and mood as well as boost energy levels. There are also various health and fitness-related initiatives implemented by the government, private bodies as well as non-governmental organisations, which Malaysians can benefit from participating in.
