Fahmi: Government to amend new data cybersecurity laws for Malaysia to become Asian digital hub

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is looking into amending new data and cybersecurity laws to turn Malaysia into the digital hub of Asia.

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said this would include amending the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 and scrutinising the new Omnibus Bill, to strengthen Malaysia's digital policies.

"Malaysia is now 27th in the World Competitive Index, improving five spots from the previous year.

"We are second in Southeast Asia behind Singapore.

"Many investors see us as a safe destination and they are confident with the government's policies, and this could enable Malaysia to be a digital hub for international countries, and a gateway to other Asian countries."

He said this at the launch of D Conference 2023 organised by Malaysia Digital Association here, today.

Fahmi added that the improved legislation as well as creating one protocol on data sharing and data sovereignty in Asean would complete the digital ecosystem not just in Malaysia, but in Southeast Asia as well.

"With this, a golden digital decade in Malaysia is possible and will indirectly make Malaysia as the Digital Asian Tiger.

"This is the ministry's hope and the government's commitment, and we believe that the digital economy will play a big role in our economic growth in the near future," he added.

Also present at the event was New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd group managing editor Datuk Ahmad Zaini Kamaruzzaman.
